"A fine mess" is an oxymoron. Look up oxymoron, fine and mess in the dictionary before commenting - the locution can be taken any manner of ways to be self-contradictory.

Maybe it would be more clear to one if written in one of these ways:

This is an appealing, unappealing meal
This is an admirably bad situation
This is a delicate mud pit
This is a pure conglomerate of material...

All are just varying idiomatically but saying the same thing as "A fine mess"
