my son always says random friends and I don't get how friends can be random

MMORPG’s often create “random friends,” and I believe you’re taking him too literally. I believe he means “people with whom, at the moment, he is sharing a common interest.” Also, if he’s being deliberately nondescript about them, there’s probably a reason.

Truly random friends probably don’t exist because in order to know someone, you must have something in common with them in order to make a connection, and that eliminates complete randomness.
